The Nicosia Criminal Investigation Department (TAE) is investigating the death of a 35-year-old foreign inmate serving a long sentence in the Central Prison of Cyprus. The incident occurred in Block No. 4 after a brief encounter with another prisoner — a Cypriot convicted of lighter offences.

The Cypriot inmate entered the cell of the 35-year-old Egyptian and left a few seconds later. A conflict apparently occurred between them, after which guards intervened and separated the prisoners. According to reports, the Egyptian then tried again to reach the other inmate, insisting that he wanted to hit him.

Due to the general tension, the prison security unit entered the block, and all inmates were locked in their cells. The 35-year-old was left in the guards’ office. Approximately 8–10 minutes later, he felt unwell and lost consciousness. An ambulance was called, and the Nicosia TAE was notified.

According to preliminary information from the guards, there were no visible signs of injury on the Egyptian’s body. The exact cause of death will be determined after the forensic examination, which is scheduled for tomorrow. CCTV footage from the block has already been handed over to the police.

TAE investigators are taking statements from guards and inmates to determine whether physical violence occurred and how exactly the events unfolded. The Cypriot inmate involved in the incident will also be questioned. It is known that the deceased was serving a 17-year sentence for the manslaughter of a young woman in a village in the Larnaca district. His country’s embassy has already been informed of his death to notify his relatives.
