The government of Cyprus is preparing a series of infrastructure projects to address the transport crisis in Limassol, where traffic congestion remains one of the city's main problems. This was stated by Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades after a meeting with the mayors of the municipalities in the region.

According to the minister, the authorities intend to identify priority road projects and speed up their implementation. Vafeades noted that the situation in Limassol is becoming increasingly difficult: around 10,000 new vehicles are registered in the city every year, while the existing road network can no longer cope with the load.

The main topic of discussion was the Limassol northern bypass road — a major project costing up to 200 million euros. The new highway is expected to run parallel to the coastal road and connect the areas of Amathus and Germasogeia in the east with Kourion and Ypsonas in the west. The authorities hope to announce tenders for three sections of the road by the end of the year.

The project has been under discussion for more than 20 years, but has still not been fully implemented. The ministry is now requiring municipalities to submit a final list of priority transport projects within two weeks.

The development of public transport was also discussed. The minister acknowledged that the existing “Park and Ride” system in Limassol is not being used efficiently enough. According to him, bus lanes will be introduced only after additional parking spaces are created and the number of buses on routes is increased.

Limassol Mayor Yiannis Armouftis supported the government's initiatives and stressed that the situation requires urgent solutions.

“Every day of delay makes life harder for the residents of Limassol,” he said.
