Over 4,000 Firecrackers Seized Across Cyprus During Easter Holiday
Cyprus police seized more than 4,000 firecrackers during inspections carried out across the island during the Easter celebrations. In the past two weeks alone, 18 people were arrested in connection with related offenses.
According to a spokesperson from the Police Communications Office, between April 7 and 21, officers carried out 2,334 checks in parks, churchyards, and other public spaces commonly visited by young people, inspecting a total of 1,120 individuals.
The 18 arrests were related to the possession and use of firecrackers and other associated crimes. Most of those arrested faced charges such as disturbing the peace, unlawful assembly, possession and use of fireworks, carrying dangerous items, and even tire theft. Several minors were among those detained.
In total, more than 4,000 firecrackers were taken off the streets. In one notable case on Saturday, police in Paphos found 55 factory-made firecrackers and four fireworks in the possession of a 45-year-old man.
The Easter period this year was marked by numerous incidents, with police reporting fires, brawls, arrests, and injuries caused by firecrackers. Over the past month, firefighters responded to more than 400 fire-related emergencies, most of them linked to traditional Easter bonfires known as lambradjia.
