€1,000 Promised for Explosion in Limassol: Suspects Remain in Custody

Two men accused of attempting to bomb establishments in the Zakaki area of Limassol will remain in custody until the start of court hearings. The court ruled that the risk of reoffending is high.
The case concerns two incidents: an attempted explosion at a beer pub and at a café. The investigation established that a 44-year-old Sri Lankan national did not act on his own initiative — he admitted that he received instructions from a 36-year-old Greek Cypriot, who promised him a reward of €1,000.
According to the accused, he:
- on December 30 planted an explosive device near a pub;
- on Christmas morning placed a similar device near a café in the same area.
In the second case, the explosion did not occur. CCTV cameras recorded that several hours later both men returned to the site, allegedly to retrieve the device.
The court rejected the defense’s arguments for a lighter preventive measure, noting that one of the accused had recently been released on parole in a drug-related case, while the other was staying in the country illegally.
They face charges including:
- conspiracy to commit a serious crime;
- attempted destruction of property using explosives;
- possession and transportation of explosive substances;
- motorcycle theft.
