Yellow warning in Cyprus: cyclone 'Erminio' to bring rain, thunderstorms, strong winds and dust
In Cyprus, the Department of Meteorology (Τμήμα Μετεωρολογίας) issued a yellow warning on April 1, 2026, due to the low-pressure system 'Erminio', centered in the central Mediterranean. Precipitation, locally heavy thunderstorms, increased winds, and dust in the atmosphere are expected.
On Wednesday night, April 1, rain and locally isolated thunderstorms are forecast; precipitation will be prolonged or intense in some areas. Winds will be northeasterly to southeasterly, mainly moderate to strong, 4–5 on the Beaufort scale, occasionally reaching 5–6 on the coasts, especially in the west and north. The sea will generally be rough to very rough in places. Overnight temperatures: around 11° inland, 15° on the coast, and 8° in the high mountains. Dust will be present in the atmosphere, with concentrations increasing locally.
On Thursday, April 2, cloudy skies, rain, and isolated thunderstorms will persist in the morning with locally prolonged phenomena; a significant improvement is expected by noon, after which precipitation will become local, mainly in eastern districts. Daytime temperatures will rise to 21–22° on the plains and coast, and about 14° in the mountains. During thunderstorms, winds may shift and strengthen abruptly.
On Friday, local short-term showers and thunderstorms are expected; on Saturday, initial rain is possible in the west and northwest, moving to mountain and eastern areas in the afternoon. Sunday's forecast is mainly cloudy with local showers and isolated thunderstorms. The Department of Meteorology recommends considering the worsening sea and wind conditions when planning travel and sea outings.
