It may seem like a straightforward procedure, but there are important aspects when paying by bank card that you must consider.

Types of Gas Stations in Cyprus

Gas stations in Cyprus can be fully automated or staffed. However, most often, attendants work from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM on weekdays and until 4:00 PM on Saturdays. Outside these hours, the pumps operate in automatic mode.

There aren't many large gas stations with attendants outside these hours, and they are typically part of major networks such as:

  • Agip
  • Eko
  • ESSO
  • Lukoil
  • Petrolina
  • Shell

Using an Automated Gas Station in Cyprus

  1. Stop at the pump with the payment terminal and insert the nozzle into your tank.
  2. Insert banknotes into the bill acceptor or your bank card into the slot—the pump will have instructions. If using a card, enter your PIN code.
  3. Enter the amount you want to refuel by pressing the "Amount" button on the screen.
  4. Press the pump number corresponding to the nozzle you inserted into your tank on the left side.
  5. After refueling, return the nozzle to its place and take your receipt.

Card Payment Holds at Gas Stations in Cyprus

This is the crucial nuance. Even if you only intend to refuel a small amount, 60-70 euros will be held on your bank card, depending on the station. If you refuel less, keep the receipt. The funds may be released the next day or take several weeks.

Refund of Unused Fuel at Gas Stations in Cyprus

If you entered a certain amount, but the physical amount of fuel purchased did not fit into the tank, you need to do the following:

  • Press "Ticket request" on the payment terminal
  • Check if the receipt has the line "Not delivered credit pounds"
  • At a fully automated gas station, call the number indicated on the pump
  • At a staffed gas station, return during working hours to either receive a refund or add more fuel
