Deadlines for fines issued by a police officer
For a fine issued by the police, the payment deadline is 30 days.
If you do not pay within this time, the amount will increase by 50%, with an additional 15 days given to make the payment.
If 150% of the fine is not paid within 45 days of the officer's ruling, a representative will call the offender and offer to settle the fine.
If this does not happen, the case is taken to court.
Deadlines for fines issued by cameras
A fine from an automatic violation detection camera is sent by registered mail to the address of the vehicle owner, as registered during the vehicle's purchase. The deadlines and procedure are the same as with a police officer — 30 days, then another 15 days with a 1.5 multiplier. The date is counted from when the vehicle owner receives the registered letter at the post office.
Deadlines for fines from the municipality
Municipal services issue fines for improper parking or violation of parking payment rules. The amounts here are not as high, but the deadlines are shorter — 15 days from the moment of receiving the fine, and another 15 days with a 1.5 multiplier — that is, an additional 50%.
Where to find information about existing fines
You can inquire about fines in person at a police station or by contacting the police department by phone. For fines issued by cameras, there is a separate number — 80008009. We provided more details in the article: how to find out about existing fines in Cyprus.
You can also pay fines using the JCC Smart online service, as we described its features. You will need the section "Cyprus Police" — here is the direct link.
Frequently asked questions about fines in Cyprus
If someone else was driving my car?
The police officer will issue a fine directly to the offender, but cameras cannot do this. In this case, you need to fill out a special form included in the letter from the police, where you will need to provide the details of the actual offender and send it to the address provided in the fine letter.
How to view a violation from a road camera?
The fine letter that arrives by mail contains login information for accessing the violation detection system, allowing you to view the violation. These credentials — login and password — will need to be entered on the dedicated website.
What about fines with rental cars?
The police officer will issue a fine directly to the driver. We recommend paying it to avoid potential issues when leaving the country and having to pay the fine anyway.
To protect yourself from fines from cameras and the municipality, rental companies take a deposit, which will be deducted in case of a violation by the renter. By the way, in the search engine Localrent, there is a "No Deposit" filter, but rental costs will be slightly higher in this case.
