Two Communities in Cyprus to Join Forces for Cleanup in Nicosia
A bi-communal event will take place in Nicosia to celebrate "World Cleanup Day." The event is scheduled for September 20 as part of the "Let’s Do It Cyprus" project.
Volunteers from both communities, sponsored by the U.S. Embassy, will meet at 5:30 PM at the Büyük Han monument in the north and at the Faneromeni Church in the south.
The cleanup will officially begin at 6:00 PM. For one hour, participants will work to clean an area encompassing 11 bastions within the walls of Nicosia. The event will conclude at 7:00 PM at the Home for Cooperation in the buffer zone.
“We invite everyone to join the international Lets Do It! campaign. All participants will receive a World Cleanup Certificate and will be offered drinks and snacks,” said the organizers.
World Cleanup Day is an annual global initiative aimed at tackling the issue of solid waste, including marine pollution. The event is organized by the World organization, which involves over 70 million volunteers worldwide.
The "Green World" movement has brought together the two communities in Cyprus and has reached out to the Turkish Municipality of Nicosia for support in cleaning the fortress walls.
