Ecological disaster in the forests of the TRNC: environmentalist accused the authorities of the death of thousands of pines
Well-known Cypriot biologist and environmentalist Hasan Sarpten made a sharp statement regarding the mass dying of pine forests in Northern Cyprus. According to him, the island is on the brink of an ecological disaster due to the pine processionary moth (çam kese böceği), which is literally destroying trees.
Sarpten placed full responsibility on the Ministry of Agriculture and the Department of Forestry, accusing officials of complete inaction and the disruption of the seasonal aerial treatment of forests. «I hope that the sin for every dead tree and every dried branch will one day fall upon you», — the activist said. Environmentalists warn that if urgent measures are not taken, the TRNC risks losing a significant part of its green fund.
