Turkey is holding large-scale celebrations to mark the 573rd anniversary of the conquest of Istanbul by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror in 1453. The central event of the festivities, organized in the metropolis, was the traditional “Conquest March” (Fetih Yürüyüşü). In the city, on its main squares and historical locations, including the square in front of the Hagia Sophia Mosque, performances by military bands (mehter) are taking place. The celebration program also includes a naval parade in the Bosphorus Strait, demonstration flights by the SOLOTÜRK air team, large-scale drone light shows and festive fireworks. The country’s top leadership is taking part in the ceremonial events.
