Erhürman calls for restraint in Cyprus dialogue and warns against escalating rhetoric

TRNC leader Tufan Erhürman has issued a statement emphasizing the need for a cautious approach to public remarks amid ongoing discussions on the Cyprus settlement.

In a social media post, he noted that from the very beginning — both in official meetings and public statements — the Turkish Cypriot side has insisted on the impermissibility of steps that could complicate the negotiation process. According to him, special attention was paid to avoiding rhetoric that could "poison the atmosphere" and escalate mutual accusations.

Erhürman stated that despite the restraint shown and the refusal to react to a series of statements, accusations continue to come from the Greek Cypriot side, including through the media. He also commented on recent discussions regarding the "status at the negotiating table."

He claimed that the Greek Cypriot side presents its participation as the "President of the Republic of Cyprus," however, the current process is characterized by discussions rather than full-scale negotiations. He emphasized that within UN procedures, the participants are viewed as "two leaders," regardless of the meeting format, and that this is recorded in the organization's protocols.

"These claims are worthless when the facts are clear. Is the goal to move closer to a solution or to create new obstacles?" he stated, questioning the effectiveness of such rhetoric.
