Drug courier from the south detained in northern Nicosia: one kilogram of cannabis seized
In northern Nicosia, a suspect transporting a large shipment of drugs was detained during an anti-drug operation. As police officer Bilal Altun reported in court, the operation was carried out on April 29, 2026, on the Northern Ring Road by anti-drug and smuggling units.
During a search of the vehicle driven by the suspect, who had arrived from the southern part of Cyprus as a tourist, approximately one kilogram of a substance suspected to be cannabis was found under the driver's seat. The prohibited substance was seized as evidence.
According to police, the detainee stated in a voluntary confession that he received the drugs from an unknown person via the Telegram messenger. He was instructed to transport them from the southern part of the island to the TRNC for a fee of 500 euros.
The investigation also established that between April 18 and 29, the suspect had already delivered about 4 kilograms of drugs to various points in Nicosia, for which he received a total of 2000 euros.
Police noted that CCTV footage is available to the investigation, and the seized substances have been sent for laboratory analysis. The investigation is ongoing.
Law enforcement authorities applied to the court for a seven-day extension of the suspect's detention to ensure the full completion of investigative actions.
