Large-scale police raids on roads and in entertainment venues: hundreds of violations overnight

Northern Cyprus police conducted coordinated security and traffic checks on May 6, 2026, in the districts of Famagusta, Girne, and Güzelyurt. The operations took place simultaneously from 20:00 to 24:00 and covered roads, entertainment venues, casinos, cafes, and other crowded places.
In Famagusta, police officers checked 972 drivers, 312 of whom were prosecuted for traffic violations. Among them were 216 cases of speeding, as well as violations related to the lack of insurance, registration documents, and ignoring road signs. One vehicle was impounded. Also, in entertainment venues, 12 people were fined for being illegally in a casino.
In Girne, checks affected 1,592 drivers, 226 of whom violated traffic rules. There were 88 cases of speeding, as well as cases of drunk driving and driving without insurance. 20 vehicles were impounded, and one driver was arrested. In addition, six people were detained for illegal residence, and 39 casino visitors were fined for violating the entry ban.
In Güzelyurt, 664 drivers were checked, and 89 of them were prosecuted. Among the violations were speeding, driving without insurance, and driving under the influence. Two cars were impounded, and one driver was arrested. A case was also initiated against a shop owner for the unlicensed sale of tobacco products.
