The United States of America welcomes the appointment of the UN envoy to Cyprus
The United States of America welcomes the appointment of the UN envoy to Cyprus. The envoy will be responsible for identifying points of convergence between the two communities to resume negotiations. This was stated by the U.S. Ambassador to Cyprus, Julie Fisher.
Responding to a question about the Cyprus issue in an interview with Kathimerini, the U.S. Ambassador suggested waiting for the UN Secretary-General's statement regarding the appointment of the envoy. She also emphasized that America calls for the prompt resumption of negotiations.
Julie Fisher expressed satisfaction with the excellent cooperation between the U.S. and Cyprus and noted Cyprus's desire to leave behind the 'bad reputation' that has accompanied it for some time.
It is also worth noting that the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Ersin Tatar, stated in a special BRT broadcast that the Personal Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Maria Angela Holguin Cuéllar, will be appointed for a term not exceeding 6 months.
He also confirmed that the Cypriot-Turkish side has given its consent to the appointment of the Personal Representative of the UN Secretary-General after fulfilling all conditions: the appointment will be made soon.
