In Gonyeli, court sent a suspect in a home burglary to pre-trial detention
In Gonyeli, Northern Cyprus, a suspect in a private home burglary, A.H., appeared in court again. At the request of the police, the court ordered that the accused be placed in custody for up to 60 days.
Police officer Nurettin Özgenler reported in court that on January 14, 2026, between 08:50 and 15:30 on Marmaris Street in Gonyeli, a break-in occurred through an open aluminum latch on the eastern side of the bedroom. From a bedroom closet, a safe containing cash was stolen — USD 25,040, GBP 18,300, TRY 20,000, and EUR 350 — as well as several gold items: rings with three and five diamonds, rings with small stones, a men’s white and yellow gold ring with an inset, a gold chain with the symbol of the Hand of Fatma, a forged bracelet, earrings with a blue emerald, and other jewelry.
According to police, fingerprints found on the window matched those of the suspect. He was detained on January 16; during a search in Lefkoşa, TRY 18,000 and USD 500 were found. Analysis of CCTV recordings indicated the involvement of an accomplice, who, according to established data, left the country on January 15. The police also determined that the accused, together with the accomplice, spent the stolen funds and purchased two phones worth a total of USD 3,500; one phone was given to the suspect’s girlfriend. The seized phones were taken as evidence.
During the hearing, it was noted that the accused had previous charges related to robbery, nighttime burglaries, and bodily harm in Famagusta and Lefkoşa, and had been released on bail. The defense lawyer claimed that the crime was committed by the accomplice, not his client, and questioned the police. Judge Şevket Gazi granted the police request to place the accused in pre-trial detention during the investigation.
