Earthquake of magnitude 3.5 strikes the Sea of Marmara

During the night of October 5, 2025, an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.5 occurred in the Sea of Marmara. According to Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the epicenter was located 21.5 km southwest of the Büyükçekmece district (Istanbul Province) at a depth of approximately 8.4 km.
The tremor was felt by residents of Istanbul’s coastal districts, including Büyükçekmece, Avcılar, and Silivri. The shaking lasted a few seconds, but there were no reports of injuries or building damage.
Seismologists note that such minor tremors are typical for the Marmara region, where the active segment of the North Anatolian Fault runs. They emphasize that even small quakes serve as a reminder of the need for preparedness and adherence to safety measures.
The Istanbul Municipality and AFAD stated that they continue to monitor seismic activity in the region and are ready to respond promptly in case of aftershocks. Residents are advised to remain calm and follow official updates.
