Series of Powerful Earthquakes Strike Istanbul
A series of powerful earthquakes rattled Istanbul on Wednesday, April 23, causing widespread panic among residents. Tremors were felt across various parts of the city. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan extended his wishes for a swift recovery to those affected.
According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the first and strongest quake, with a magnitude of 6.2, struck around 12:50 p.m. The epicenter was located in the Sea of Marmara, off the coast of Silivri. The shaking was felt throughout Istanbul, especially in the western district of Ataköy. Two more tremors followed shortly after, measuring 4.4 and 4.9 in magnitude near the coastal area of Büyükçekmece.
Residents rushed into the streets in fear. Power outages were reported, and in many homes, walls trembled and chandeliers swayed. The epicenter of the quake was located approximately 7 kilometers below the surface.
AFAD urged people to stay away from damaged buildings and to use SMS or internet-based messaging apps to communicate, in order to keep emergency lines free.
“Do not enter damaged buildings after an earthquake. Stay away from unsafe structures. Communicate via text or online messaging apps, and follow all instructions issued by official emergency services,” AFAD advised.
Government officials are actively monitoring the situation and have expressed their solidarity with those affected.
“I send my best wishes for a speedy recovery to all citizens. We are following developments closely,” President Erdoğan said.
“A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Silivri, in the Sea of Marmara near Istanbul. AFAD and all relevant agencies have launched on-site assessments. My thoughts are with all citizens impacted by the quake,” said Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya.
