In January 2026, the Number of Fatal Road Accidents Sharply Decreased in Northern Cyprus

The Northern Cyprus Police reported a significant decrease in the number of fatal road traffic accidents and deaths in January 2026 compared to the same period last year.
According to the General Police Directorate (PGM), in January 2025 there were 7 fatal accidents resulting in 8 deaths, whereas in January 2026 only one fatal accident with one death was recorded.
The police attribute the positive trend to increased road controls, preventive measures, and community-oriented policing programs. The statement emphasizes that efforts to ensure road safety will continue.
During January 2026, 236 traffic accidents occurred in Northern Cyprus:
- 1 — fatal
- 65 — with injuries
- 170 — with property damage
In accidents with injuries, 100 people were affected. The main causes of accidents were cited as inattentive driving, speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, and other violations.
During the same period, the police checked 16,201 drivers.
Following the raids:
- 2,689 people were held accountable
- 216 vehicles were removed from circulation
- 15 drivers were detained
The police reminded that the goal is zero fatalities on the roads and urged drivers to strictly follow traffic rules.
