Junior secondary school is the last compulsory stage in education on the island. Secondary education lasts three years. In private schools, from the age of 12, pupils start following a specialized (profile) education system getting ready for a particular educational institution.
High school isn't compulsory. The study lasts for 3 years, from 15 to 18 years. Many children study at the Lyceum (Lykeio) and prepare to enter the university. Or a child can choose specialized education and get a profession. In Cyprus, it is in technical schools.
There are also colleges, after graduating from which one can immediately enter the second year of the university.
