AKEL demands zero tolerance for corruption and suspension of mayors under criminal investigation
The AKEL party stated the need for immediate and effective action against corruption, emphasizing that state institutions must function fully and that all reports of misconduct by politicians and public officials should be thoroughly investigated.
The statement notes that, after a lengthy delay, two mayors under investigation for serious criminal cases — rape and domestic violence — have finally been suspended. AKEL emphasizes, however, that the mayor of Ayia Napa, Christos Jeannettos, representing the DISY party, has still not been suspended, despite being a defendant in a criminal court case concerning document forgery and illegal acquisition of funds related to European grants.
The party also stated that key unresolved issues remain the accountability of the Presidential Palace and the Attorney General's Office. In particular, in the Videogate case, neither explanations nor conclusions have been provided by the authorities. Furthermore, information about donors to the First Lady’s fund, according to AKEL, remains inaccessible to the public.
The party specifically criticized the Attorney General's Office for the lack of progress in investigating corruption in the Cyprus Football Association, the materials of which, according to AKEL, have "stalled" at the review stage.
In conclusion, the party stressed that such issues will not be forgotten or swept under the rug, warning that in the event of government inaction, authorities will face opposition not only from AKEL but also from a significant part of society.
