Farmers in Geri complain of violations after animal culling
Farmers in Geri have reported serious violations following animal culling operations on a farm.
According to them, following the procedures carried out the day before, hundreds of dead animals remained on-site for about 24 hours, and protective suits and equipment were scattered across the farm territory. The owners of the holding claim that biosafety measures were not properly observed.
Farmers also stated that due to the situation, they were unable to access the farm in the morning to feed other animals, specifically rabbits.
Veterinary services, for their part, stated that they acted in accordance with established protocols. According to Senior Veterinary Inspector Apostolos Maserisi, the specialists' work took place under difficult conditions, and staff faced a tense atmosphere, threats, and insults as farmers deal with the loss of their livelihoods.
Meanwhile, authorities reminded farmers and citizens that a special website www.footandmouth.gov.cy has been launched to provide information on support measures and the foot-and-mouth disease situation.
