Larnaca switches to 'smart' water: thousands of meters already installed
A project to implement 'smart' water meters is being actively carried out in Larnaca, already demonstrating rapid and steady progress. The initiative is part of a strategy to modernize the water supply system and manage water resources more effectively.
According to the Water Board of Larnaca, over 17,000 devices have been installed to date. The full completion of the project — the installation of 25,000 meters — is expected by the end of June 2026.
Work is underway in the municipal districts of Livadia and Aradippou, as well as in the Larnaca–Dhekelia tourist zone and surrounding areas. Priority is given to areas with high water loss and increased consumption, including commercially active zones.
The new system will allow residents to track water consumption in real-time through a digital platform. Users will be able to monitor costs, detect leaks promptly, and avoid overpayments. Automatic notifications in case of abnormal consumption are also provided.
For the water supply system itself, the implementation of technology means increased efficiency: daily analysis of the water balance, rapid leak detection, reduction of unaccounted losses, and identification of illegal connections will become possible.
The creation of the digital platform for consumers is in its final stage. After its launch, an information campaign for residents will be conducted.
The project is funded by the European Recovery and Resilience Facility under the 'NextGenerationEU' program, as well as the organization's own funds.
Authorities emphasize that the implementation of modern technologies in water supply not only improves the quality of service but also promotes a more careful use of water resources — one of Cyprus's key natural assets.
