A fire broke out in a moving car on the highway connecting Larnaca and Ayia Napa on Saturday evening, police reported. According to law enforcement, the blaze occurred at around 21:20.
Police clarified that two people in the car stated the cause of the fire was an unextinguished cigarette butt. The fire was quickly extinguished by the arriving fire brigade.
The police report did not provide information on casualties or the extent of material damage. The incident was recorded and entered into the unified road incident tracking system, the authorities added.
The event highlights the potential danger of mishandling fire inside a vehicle. Drivers and passengers are advised to consider the risk of fire when smoking in vehicles and to stop immediately and notify emergency services if smoke is detected.
