Storm “Byron” hit Cyprus: heavy rains, tornadoes and power outages

Cyprus has come under the influence of cyclone “Byron”, which in the past 24 hours brought heavy rains, thunderstorms and local flooding. The Meteorological Service issued a yellow warning valid until 18:00: very intense rainfall, hail and strengthening winds are expected in some areas.
The Paphos district was particularly affected: two waterspouts were observed off the coast, and a tornado hit Tala. In several areas, the bad weather caused power outages — several communities in Paphos and parts of Nicosia were left without electricity, while emergency crews are working to restore supply.
Due to the severe weather, the Limassol municipality cancelled the Christmas events scheduled for 7 December on Anexartisias and Ayios Andreas streets, citing safety concerns. Officials say they will announce whether the events will be rescheduled.
