Man arrested in Larnaca for machete attack: victim loses finger
Larnaca — The Larnaca District Court has ordered the eight-day detention of a 33-year-old man suspected of a brutal machete attack in which his ex-wife’s new partner suffered severe injuries and the amputation of his thumb.
The incident occurred early in the morning. At 07:15, police received a call from a 46-year-old woman who reported that her former husband had entered the apartment via the balcony and attacked her and her partner.
According to investigators, the man went into the kitchen, grabbed a machete and began striking the 40-year-old victim on various parts of the body. The victim attempted to escape via the balcony, but the attacker caught up with him and continued the assault.
The suspect then turned on his ex-wife, threatening to kill her. The woman managed to flee and reach the building’s parking area, where she was found by police officers. The attacker fled the scene but was arrested later the same day.
The injured man was taken to Larnaca General Hospital, where doctors diagnosed:
- amputation of the left thumb;
- partial amputation of the right thumb and index finger;
- multiple lacerations and contusions on the hands;
- injuries to the back and head.
Due to his extremely serious condition, he was transferred to Nicosia, where he continues treatment and remains in critical condition.
Preliminary information suggests the motive was jealousy — the suspect allegedly became enraged after learning about his ex-wife’s new relationship.
Police are investigating a number of serious offences, including:
- attempted murder,
- intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm,
- unlawful entry into a dwelling,
- carrying a bladed weapon,
- threats, stalking and psychological abuse.
The investigation is ongoing.
