Easter bonfires allowed in Paphos only under strict conditions
In Paphos, Cyprus, on April 10, 2026, the municipality announced that the traditional lighting of Easter bonfires (lampratzia) will only be permitted under strict conditions. This was stated by the Head of the Public Health and Sanitation Department of the municipality, Dr. Christos Christou (Χρίστος Χρίστου).
During a joint meeting with the police and the Fire Service (Πυροσβεστική Υπηρεσία), it was decided that no church will be allowed to light a bonfire on Holy Saturday night without a request previously submitted by the church committee and official permission from the municipality. Permission will be granted subject to several conditions, including the use of a limited amount of wood and the selection of a suitable controlled location.
The Paphos Municipality (Δήμος Πάφου) has formed crews that will work until noon on Holy Saturday to clear materials and prevent uncontrolled situations. As of now, only one parish committee has submitted an application for the event, and the request is being considered in dialogue with the municipality.
District mayors, specifically Akamas Mayor Marinos Lambrou (Μαρίνος Λάμπρου) and Yeroskipou Mayor Nikos Palios (Νίκος Παλιός), emphasized the need for public order and measures for surveillance and protection of the sites. Increased police patrols continue to operate in the Paphos district to prevent the use of firecrackers and other dangerous activities. City authorities urge residents to behave responsibly and cooperate with agencies for a safe celebration.
