What to do if you found an artifact?

Updated: 1 month ago

There is a special law on Cyprus that regulates the handling of historically valuable items, of which there are indeed many. So, here are our lawyer's comments:

"Those who find historical/ancient artifacts or items of historical value must immediately report this to the relevant authority (Eski eserler dairesi müdürlüğü - Ancient Monuments Department and Museum Division) or the nearest police station. Concealing such information or any involvement in concealing information about discovered historical valuables is considered a criminal offense.

When reporting such a discovery, the finder is entitled to a reward, established as a percentage of the estimated value of the object (the law sets it at 50%). However, if the reported or found artifact does not have sufficient value for preservation, no reward is given to the informant.

Excavating or searching for artifacts without obtaining permission from the relevant authority is prohibited by law and carries criminal liability.
