Attention to the issue of domestic violence is intensifying in the TRNC. Following a meeting of the «Domestic Violence Prevention Network», organized by the Turkish Cypriot Medical Association on April 21, 2026, civil society representatives declared the need for urgent systemic changes.

Various organizations participated in the discussion, conducting a comprehensive analysis of the current situation, identifying key problems, and proposing solutions. Participants emphasized that an effective fight against domestic violence is impossible without close cooperation between state structures and public initiatives.

One of the main outcomes of the meeting was an agreement on expanding information campaigns and increasing public awareness. It was also noted that it is necessary to strengthen inter-agency cooperation and modernize existing response mechanisms.

Particular attention was paid to the vulnerable position of foreign victims of violence. Participants pointed out the structural barriers they face, including limited access to assistance and legal protection.

Experts also stressed the need for training professionals working with victims, including doctors, nurses, and emergency service staff. Medical Association representative Dr. Sinem Şığıt İkiz announced plans for specialized training for medical personnel, especially in emergency departments.

A key demand of the meeting was the creation of an effective and comprehensive legal framework to combat domestic violence. Representatives of organizations, including the Women's Support Association for Life (KAYAD), called on the authorities to take concrete and decisive action.

Participants emphasized that only a systemic and long-term approach will ensure the protection of victims and reduce the level of violence in society.
