Meat Producers in TRNC Suspend Sale of Live Animals
The Association of Animal Producers and Breeders has decided to halt the sale of live animals for a month. Livestock breeders in the TRNC continue to strike.
Mustafa Naymogulları, President of the Livestock Association, announced that they have ceased the sale of live animals for a month. Speaking in front of the Prime Minister's Office the day before, the union leader stated that butchers would continue their protest actions.
According to the head of the association, all abattoirs will be monitored, and fines will be imposed on those who do not comply with this decision. He also added that protest actions near the Prime Minister's Office building would continue today.
It's worth noting that meat producers' strikes have been ongoing in Northern Cyprus for the second week. Other unions joined them yesterday.
Butchers are unhappy with “the rise in production costs due to the government's meat import policy and the setting of prices for raw milk and livestock.”
Earlier, TRNC authorities set the maximum allowable price for meat at 550 Turkish lira. This caused dissatisfaction among producers and led to meat practically disappearing from store shelves for a while.
The next government decision was to approve the import of frozen lamb and minced meat from abroad. Meat products will be imported into the TRNC from the Netherlands.
The cost of frozen meat to be imported to Northern Cyprus will not exceed 400 Turkish lira.
