Police investigate extortion and drug trafficking in Larnaca
Police in Larnaca are investigating a criminal group suspected of extortion and drug trafficking. On January 27, 2026, the Larnaca District Court placed five detainees in custody for eight days following searches, during which a notebook with names and cash amounts was seized.
Two investigative teams are examining financial records and taking statements from owners of entertainment venues allegedly approached by criminal groups. The detainees are charged with participation in a criminal organization, complicity and involvement in crimes, conspiracy to commit a serious offense, extortion with threats, blackmail, and money laundering.
Most of the investigation focuses on a 42-year-old man whose income, according to the court, does not match his declared assets. Two confiscated mobile phones contained video recordings from 2023–2025 showing a 22-year-old National Guard contractor displaying large sums of cash and hiding items allegedly drugs. According to the investigation, the proceeds went to the same 42-year-old.
The mobile phones have been sent for forensic examination, and body armor and two vehicles were seized. A separate investigation is underway against a second group, where the 48-year-old alleged leader had his detention extended; he is accused of conspiracy, extortion, and participation in a criminal organization. According to statements, the group demanded €7,000 once and €1,000 monthly from a business owner. Four foreigners remain in custody, three are wanted. Cyprus revoked international protection for some Palestinians involved in a street shooting.
Two businessmen, aged 47 and 43, were brought to court on suspicion of interfering with justice and conspiracy; they deny involvement.
