Rules for transporting batteries to Northern Cyprus

Updated: 2 weeks ago

Today it is hard to imagine traveling without electronic devices, including power banks for charging phones or laptops.

However, due to cases of battery fires, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and airlines have implemented a series of restrictions on carrying such devices on passenger aircraft. The full version of the IATA document can be viewed here.

Let's understand what capacity power banks and spare batteries can be taken on board an aircraft in checked baggage or carry-on luggage, and also convert Watt-hours (Wh) to Milliamp-hours (mAh).

Battery Capacity for Air Travel:

  • Up to 100 Wh - no restrictions on quantity (but not exceeding 5 kilograms), can be carried with the device - in both checked baggage and carry-on luggage, separately - only in carry-on luggage;
  • From 100 to 160 Wh - only separately packed in carry-on luggage, maximum of two pieces;
  • Over 160 Wh - prohibited for transport.

Airlines may have additional restrictions, but all carriers arriving in North Cyprus comply with IATA recommendations:

  • Turkish Airlines
  • Pegasus airlines
  • Anadolu Jet
  • Fly Kibris

Frequently Asked Questions about Battery Transport

How to convert Watt-hours to Milliamp-hours?

The capacity of power banks and removable batteries is usually indicated in milliamp-hours (mAh). To convert Watt-hours to Milliamp-hours, divide by the voltage in volts and multiply by 1000. For example, at 5 volts, 100 Wh is equivalent to 20,000 mAh.

What are the other requirements for carrying batteries?

In order for your battery to be checked, it must indicate the capacity and voltage. Also, when carrying more than one battery, they must be packed separately.

Can I check a power bank in my baggage?

No, even if it fits within the 100 Wh or 20,000 mAh limit. The reason is that it is a battery without a device, and the rules state that batteries up to 100 Wh can only be transported when installed in a device.

What if I don't fit within any of the limits?

In that case, we recommend arriving on the island by ferry. For more information, read on this page.

We recommend carrying any power bank in the aircraft cabin in your carry-on luggage to avoid unnecessary questions. You can also join the Telegram chat "Northern Cyprus", which already has nearly 20,000 Russian-speaking users, and learn about recent cases of carrying batteries to North Cyprus.
