Erhürman to hold consultations with journalists and lawyers on controversial CPC
Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman has announced a series of meetings with members of the press, the Media Ethics Council, and the Bar Association to discuss amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC). According to him, the consultations will take place as early as today and will be part of the dialogue surrounding the controversial legislative initiatives.
In his social media statement, Erhürman emphasized that there are various points of view on this issue, and all of them deserve discussion. He noted that the authorities intend to seek solutions through dialogue, even if a full consensus cannot be reached.
The politician stated that the final decision will be made within the constitutional powers of the presidency, but highlighted the importance of maintaining mutual respect between state institutions, the journalistic community, and legal organizations.
Erhürman also drew attention to the atmosphere of public discussion unfolding in the media and social networks. According to him, despite sharp disagreements, society needs to maintain the ability to cooperate for the sake of the country's future and the next generations.
Commenting on criticism of public figures, Erhürman noted that politicians are obliged to show tolerance for harsh statements. However, he expressed doubt that such an approach should automatically apply to journalists and lawyers who are not political figures.
