The reconstruction of the Larnaca–Dhekelia road, which runs along one of the city's main tourist areas, could be delayed even further. The project contractor has submitted a new request for an extension, effectively pushing the completion of the work into its fourth year.

The 17.6 million euro project started in September 2020 and was originally scheduled for completion in March 2025. Later, the deadline was moved to the end of April 2026, but it has now been revealed that even this deadline is likely to be missed.

The Larnaca Tourism Board (ETAP) sent a letter to President Nikos Christodoulides asking him to personally intervene and speed up the work. The head of the organization, Dinos Lefkaritis, stated that what is happening can no longer be justified, especially considering the extensions already granted.

According to him, hotels are seeing an increase in cancellations, and tour operators are reluctant to sign new contracts because the area looks like a long-term construction site. The situation is further aggravated by tourism issues related to the conflict in the Middle East.

Industry representatives note that construction sites in front of hotels, restaurants, and leisure areas, as well as debris and unkempt road sections, are damaging the image of the tourist zone.

Larnaca Mayor Andreas Vyras stated that the issue will be discussed at a municipal council meeting. According to him, city authorities also intend to meet with the country's president, as further delays are unacceptable.

The Department of Public Works reported that they are currently reviewing the contractor's request for a new extension. If the reasons for the delay are found to be unjustified, penalty sanctions may be applied to the company.

According to department representatives, main efforts are now focused on sections near hotels in an attempt to complete them before the start of the summer tourist season.
