Europe on the brink of jet fuel shortage: flight cuts possible

The European aviation sector is facing a growing threat of jet fuel shortages, which could impact the summer tourist season and lead to flight reductions. Although about 70% of requirements are met by domestic refining capacity, a significant share of imports — mainly from the Middle East — leaves the market vulnerable to external factors.

The situation is particularly difficult in the UK, which is Europe's largest net importer of aviation fuel and does not have strategic reserves. According to analysts, the country's fuel stocks could drop to critically low levels, increasing the risk of flight disruptions.

Amid growing concern, several governments are already considering emergency measures. In the UK, for instance, airlines are allowed to consolidate passengers from different flights to reduce fuel consumption. However, such steps have drawn criticism from consumer organizations.

The International Energy Agency warns that under current conditions, Europe has about six weeks of jet fuel stocks. This increases the risk of higher ticket prices and possible localized flight cancellations, especially on less busy routes and at smaller airports.

Situation in Cyprus:
At the moment, there have been no reports of flight cancellations to Cyprus due to a lack of jet fuel. There is also no data on a critical decline in aviation kerosene stocks on the island. However, given the general European instability, risks to air traffic in the region remain.
