How to spend the New Year holidays in Northern Cyprus?

Updated: 6 months ago
Want to add your FAQ?

There is no concept of New Year or Christmas holidays in Northern Cyprus. The only winter public holiday is January 1st.

However, guided by the principle of 'yavash yavash' and respecting the traditions of other cultures that have come to the island, Cypriot-Turkish small business owners may not work on January 2nd-3rd. Or they may even take the day off on January 1st, despite it being an official holiday.

So, during the New Year holidays, it's always a good idea to be prepared—just in case the owner of the grocery store in your area decides to take a holiday in unison with the people from the post-Soviet space and disappears for a few days. Or if you need urgent household assistance, but many places are closed?

Here are our recommendations.

Stocking Up Is Key

To ensure that you don't need anything in the morning, stock up on the essentials. Of course, your New Year's salads will still be there—we all know they taste the best on January 1st, once they become last year's. But starting the new day and the new year with champagne... We're not urging you to do anything, but they say that with this approach, the day goes especially well. So, just in case, make the necessary provisions. Naturally, this applies to any products you may need on the 1st or 2nd of January.

Delivery to the Rescue

Large stores may not be open on January 1st, but who would even think of going when there's delivery? Not everyone, of course, but for example, Unimar, Ileli, Nesdersan, Tarsan Ciftlik, Sarper Market offer delivery.

Ready-made food is even better, you don't have to do anything yourself. Of course, not all restaurants will be open, but there are quite a few—we have prepared a list of establishments that provide delivery and grouped them by city.

Emergency Contacts for Emergencies
